Lorde has returned with a cover of Talking Heads’ “Take Me to the River.” The song arrives as a part of A24’s forthcoming Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense.
“Take Me to the River” was originally written and performed by Al Green in 1974 for his own album, Al Green Explores Your Mind. Four years later, Talking Heads covered the song for More Songs About Buildings and Food.
Lorde’s cover is inspired by the indie rock version of the song – Green’s original took on a jazzy, soul sound.
The New Zealand singer shared a note with fans detailing her long-standing love for the band, having first been played their music by her mother when she was twelve.
“This version of the first Talking Heads song I ever heard was done in a few days in Echo Park, L.A. with my friend Jimmy. It’s my interpretation of that pixellated spiritual experience,” she wrote. “We did it fast, I didn’t let myself tidy it up too much, it had to feel young and imperfect, the peeling posters, the jaw of acne. It’s beyond a great honor to be part of this compilation. In doing so, I am reaching back through time and pinning something to that kid’s wall.”
