Benches in Central Park, baloney on a roll, the arrogant thrust of
Sinatra's making it. The New York City of song.
Bart Howard's 'Walk Up, Vernon Duke's 'Autumn in New York', Rodgers and Hart's 'Manhattan,' and dozens of others speak of our city, of falling in and out of love, of conquering the town, of finding a spot for oneself, of leaving forever.
For me, the
most romantic of all, made without baloney or glittering crowds in canyons of steel, is
"I Walk A Little Faster" by
Cy Coleman and
Carolyn Leigh. Its lyric is aware of quiet panic, of relentless aloneness, of the pale glimmer of hope.
The song speaks of unrequited love...to the possibilities of a new love: 'Can't begin to see my future shine as yet,/No sign as yet, you're mine as yet./Rushing t'ward a face I can't divine as yet'."
It's been lovingly recorded by
Tony Bennett and precious few others, but the song is out there dressed for whatever occasion you have in mind. The simple, plaintive melody is typical Coleman. It's precisely urban, peculiar only to our specific streets, ill at ease with out-of-town. It's a taxi in the rain with no off-duty sign. It's Hamburger Heaven forever.
