Next Big Sound Introduces: Monthly Unique Listeners and Monthly Streams for all artists on Pandora

Published: July 26, 2018

On a platform as flexible and personalized as Pandora, different listeners can discover the same music through a variety of different stations, playlists, and more. Since there are seemingly countless ways for a listener to experience music on Pandora, we added the Pandora Audience section to Next Big Sound Artist Profiles to clearly highlight, front and center, just how many times an artist’s music has been streamed in the last month and how many unique listeners contributed to that number.

What exactly does the Pandora Audience section include?

  • Unique Listeners: The number of people who heard any song by this artist on Pandora in the last month
  • Streams: The total number of times a song is played anywhere on Pandora, across all tiers of service, encompassing both Pandora Radio Spins and Pandora Interactive Plays

Both metrics are shown alongside graphs depicting the daily values for each metric, allowing you to clearly follow how those numbers have ebbed and flowed over the last month.

Who can see this data?

The short answer is: anyone! Historically Pandora data has only been available in Next Big Sound to the artist, manager, or label connected to that artist’s content, but the Pandora Audience section will be publicly available to anyone with a Next Big Sound account (for those of you not already signed up, it’s free!).

Why is this useful?

With the introduction of these new metrics in Next Big Sound, artists and their teams will be able to better understand the true breadth of their audience on Pandora at-a-glance. The Pandora Audience section will show you the foundation of listeners you’ve already had the opportunity to reach through your music, and Pandora’s AMP Playbook will be your guide as you work to both engage with those listeners and reach new ones. (Don’t forget to Connect AMP if you’re the artist or manager so you can unlock even more data, like our Audience Map.)

Since this data will be available to anyone with a Next Big Sound account, this update marks the introduction to Pandora data for many music industry professionals (including venues, booking agents, publicists, A&R folks, etc.) that haven’t previously had access. This provides an opportunity for the music industry to take note of artists that are seeing strong engagement on the service, which is particularly valuable given how much weight listener feedback and affinity has on Pandora.

Is that it?

Nope! Over the next few months, more Pandora data will be unveiled to the industry, spanning from track-level performance data on Artist Profiles to Pandora-specific Next Big Sound email Notifications (which will surface noteworthy spikes in Pandora data across the artists you Follow).

Whether you’re hoping to check out Pandora data for another artist as a point of comparison or if you’re researching artists to book for your venue, we feel confident you’ll be better-equipped to make decisions as this data continues to be uncovered.

So, what do you think?

Once you have the opportunity to check out the Pandora Audience section on a Next Big Sound Artist Profile, let us know what you think! At the bottom of the section, you will see a feedback module prompting you to tell us if you loved it, liked it, are confused, or didn’t find it useful.
