New Jersey technical death metal outfit Cognitive have a new album coming out next month and to get shit flowing, they’ve released its first single, “A Pact Unholy”.
If you’ve ever heard these guys, you know how heavy these guys can be. And just like their past output, “A Pact Unholy” hits like an absolute truck. If the rest of the new album is just as heavy, it’s going to be an absolute ass-beater. Guitarist Rob Wharton explained what the band was going for with the single.
“‘A Pact Unholy’ kicks off with blistering speeds, guitars are nonstop, and the drums add to the ferocity, all leading into a dissonant, blackened midsection, and a heavy riff exit, with fantasy lyrics speaking about bloodmagic, summoning, and resurrection.”
As for the new album, Wharton said they took a pretty scattershot approach to writing, with their own interests and influences shining through.
“Our lyrics for this record are all over the place. There’s some stuff about video games and addiction and mental health. To me, that’s the kind of subject matter that hits home because everyone’s got stuff going on in their lives. It’s relatable.”
Abhorrence will be released on May 17 via Metal Blade Records, but you can preorder your copy today.
