An angsty rock sound commands on “The Sliver,” a single out today from Che Arthur. The second track release from Arthur’s fourth solo album, For That Which Now Lies Fallow, “The Sliver” invigorates with melodic vocal snarls and a distortion-friendly array of guitars that conjure a riveting ’90s alt-rock nostalgia; Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr are among the likenesses, aesthetically.
The ten songs across For That Which Now Lies Fallow encompass Arthur’s personal struggles, ranging from aging and isolation to health challenges, and “The Sliver” specifically emphasizes the power of hope in the thick of it all. The “sliver of hope remains,” refrain is especially compelling in its emotive vocal ferocity and subsequent descension into a more contemplative “one shining moment,” immersion.
