We Will Remember Taylor’s Oscars Snub All Too Well

Published: December 21, 2022

The 2023 Oscars, still several months away, have already managed to put at least half the world’s population offside, with the shortlists released today revealing a Swift-sized hole in the category for Best Live-Action Short Film. Yep, Taylor’s All Too Well: The Short Film a 15-minute heart-wrencher which sees Dylan O’Brien break Sadie Sink like a promise will not be up for an Oscar. Duly noted, Academy.

Swift clearly had her eyes on the Oscar-shaped prize after writing and directing the 35mm film as part of her rerecorded Red (Taylor’s Version). It premiered for a week in a theatre in New York last November (with tissues) then she screened it at both Tribeca Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. Swift also turned her press presence up several notches with her “Directors on Directors” conversation with Martin McDonagh for Variety and the timely release of a behind-the-scenes video showing snippets of her directing the film. Taylor’s first short also took home MTV’s Video of the Year and Best Direction awards at the 2022 VMAs  all good things if you’re on the hunt for Oscars glory.

Swift’s directorial chops may not have gotten a nod from the Academy this time but, as is her way, Taylor will likely have the last laugh. Swift’s set to direct her first feature with Searchlight Pictures soon based on an original feature-length script she wrote.

Plus, she’s still in the running for this year’s Oscars nominations; her song ‘Carolina’ in Where The Crawdads Sing making the shortlist for Best Original Song, alongside Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ from Top Gun: Maverick. Swift is also on track to earn as much as USD$620 million from her much-anticipated The Eras Tour. Regardless, she’ll remember this snub, Academy, all too well.
