SONG PREMIERE: Trummors Remake George Strait’s “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” With Colorful Justice

Published: March 26, 2024

David Lerner and Anne Cunningham’s duo Trummors aren’t the first Americana duo to take on echoes of Gram Parsons, Guy Clark, and John Prine, yet you to tip your Stetson (or trucker hat) to this enigmatic duo musical partnership. Yet the band decided to call their new album 5, which might serve as a statement enough to let the music do the talking.

Lerner and Cunningham lived with these songs a long while, writing them before the Pandemic struck in 2020, demoing them at home repeatedly before finally deciding to get together with Dan Horne—an alumnus of previous records, too, as a player—in the producer’s chair for the first time. They tracked the record in LA for about a week, did a bit of overdubbing later in Taos, and thus, after that long period of uncertainty, 5 arrived at its final form fairly quickly. Maybe it’s this paradox, this meeting of speed and deliberation, that gets at the record’s most striking quality, how these songs feel at once heavy and light, ancient and new, like something carved into stone with a feather. It’s a quality that fills me with admiration. Indeed, with something close to awe.

Glide is premiering Trummors’ spacious and glittering cover of George Strait’s “I Can Still MAke Cheyenne” off 5, which summons the duo as cosmic in the most traditional sense in a musical landscape covered with Nudie jacket wanna bees.

“We have a classic country station here in northern New Mexico, KYBR in Española. They’re big on 80s artists like Keith Whitley, Clint Black, and, of course, the King—George Strait. For this LP, we wanted to showcase that neo-traditional influence alongside our love of West Coast stuff like the Byrds and Burrito Brothers. “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” is a song about how even a sadly inevitable breakup can have a certain beauty and integrity; Anne and I both immediately connected with the melody and thought the chorus would be more powerful with a harmony. It was a breeze to record, too: Tiffanie Lanmon dialed in that Texas feel on drums, and it was fun having Dan Horne track the pedal steel live,”says the duo about their choice in covers.
