Streams of Ancient Wisdom: The History of Dutch Death & Extreme Metal by Steven Willems

During the late ’80s and early ’90s, most eyes were fixed on America and Scandinavia when it came to death and extreme metal. However, almost unknown to the masses, a fascinating and highly active scene was exploding in the Netherlands, spitting forth a legion of exciting bands, some of which made it to the international stage, and some of which sadly did not.

Streams of Ancient Wisdom: The History of Dutch Death & Extreme Metal tells the fascinating story of the Dutch extreme metal scene during its most seminal years via a massive 400-page, 8.5 x 12-inch hardcover book. Featuring a wealth of rare photographs and artwork, much of it previously unpublished, this book features over 100 interviews with Dutch bands, from well-known names like Asphyx, Pestilence, The Gathering, Thanatos, God Dethroned, Sinister and Gorefest, to underground (and underrated) heroes such as Sempiternal Deathreign, Delirium, Castle, Silenxce, Inquisitor, Phlebotomized and Dead End. Ancient Black Art – Nidrosian Black Metal

This beautiful 154-page, 8.5 x 12-inch hardcover book contains over 200 striking images (approximately 100 color) of the early Trondheim black metal scene in Norway. Nidaros—a Medieval name for the city and municipality now known as Trondheim—was the capital of Norway from 997 AD until 1217 AD. Centuries later, home to early Norwegian black metal bands such as Thorns and Manes (as well as the cathedral that famously appears on the cover of Mayhem’s landmark De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album, Trondheim became a hotbed of black metal activity in the 2000s.

Created by the author of the underground fanzine Ancient Black ArtNidrosian Black Metal pays tribute to the prolific yet secretive Norwegian black metal circle in Trondheim. The book features a wealth of both black and white and color photography, artwork, lyrics, flyers and documents relating to such stellar acts as, Mare, Kaosritual, One Tail One Head, Slagmaur, Celestial Bloodshed, Selvhat, Whoredom Rife, Aptorian Demon and Black Majesty. Skogen Zine Anthology 1993-1996

Created in the early-to-mid-’90s by writer Sascha Falquet—who also contributed keyboards to Behemoth’s Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) debut album—Skogen was one of the most memorable zines released during black metal’s golden years. Thoughtful and often lengthy interviews capture many of the most important bands in the underground metal scene during an era when the scene was exploding in dramatic fashion, something reflected in the often-extreme worldviews of the participants. Now this 200-page, 8.5 x 12-inch hardcover anthology combines all three issues in full, along with additional text and design by Dayal Patterson, and an interview with the zine’s creator. This essential collection includes early conversations with Mayhem, Necrophobic, Mortiis, Dark Funeral, Behemoth, Nifelheim, Sólstafir, Satyricon and many, many more. Get it here.
