And once you are done, add your own dose of imagination to the stats and be happy with what you have to be happy with. Because no matter what glass lens type you wear, polycarbonate or high-index, performing a thorough probe on this version of Hyperborea demands its own academic degree.

So where is this place?

There are three theories that can equally fluctuate your sobriety.

The first one has to do with Helena Blavatsky who founded a pan-religious gnostic movement called Theosophy in 1875. According to her, Hyperboreans are the second Root Race who are created from pure spirit and live near the North Pole.

The second is the brainchild of none other but Mr. Clark Ashton Smith who, in a letter to H.P. Lovecraft, has objected to the idea by claiming “Theosophy, as far as I can gather, is a version of esoteric Yoga prepared for western consumption, so I dare say its legendary must have some sort of basis in Oriental records. One can disregard the theosophy, and make good use of the stuff about elder continents, etc. I got my own ideas about Hyperborea, Poseidonis, etc. from such sources, and turned my imagination loose.“

The above two are the strongest documents we have found about this un-happened epic history. The third can be the result of us being entangled in a web of confusion. Last night however, we were notified that Sans Parade have a single out from their upcoming sophomore album Artefacts. The name, of course, being “Hyperborea” coined a myth. Only to pour ink on our scrapbook, the band claims that the song and its “Kalevala-like soundscape and spacious instrumentation” is inspired by the pagan ritual scene in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev.

Having completely agreed with the band, we then started watching the music video which is one long shot of the frontman Markus Perttula as he applies an emotional twist over his own beautiful ornate wintery orchestra. This whole minimal incident together with some facial similarities linked us to the picture of a young Clark Ashton Smith! By now we are almost on the verge of giving up. Blavatsky, Russia, Rublev, North Pole, Perttula, Winter, Winter war, Finland, Hyperborea. Never mind!

Sometimes, it’s the little things that pile up and start consuming your brain cells to the point we forget to tell you how it became hard for us last night to stop playing the beautiful dream-pop of “Hyperborea” around our room. Its gentle commodious opening, its ignition into an idyllic wall of sound blended with Perttula’s innocuous poetry and a voice sitting out of harm’s way between Bradford Cox and Andrew VanWyngarden breach any hesitant treaty. This is dreamier than more than one Atlas Sound tune. Plus, we are no stranger to Finnish aesthetics. We have a very pretty Finnish creature who dances with joy every time she hears Irwin Goodman. And in a more psychedelic sense, Sans Parade triggers the same motifs.

Artefacts, the follow up to Sans Parade’s 2013 eponymous record, has been in the making throughout a long journey of three years. It will be released on November 27th via Solina and Stargazer Records.
