Two years after
Shirley Bassey scored big with 007's "
Goldfinger" she hit the jackpot again in 1967 with "
Big Spender". A top 20 smash in her native UK, the song became one of her signature songs throughout her 60 year+ career and has been sampled and
remixed numerous times.
The song was written by
Cy Coleman and
Dorothy Fields for the Tony-winning musical
Sweet Charity. First performed in 1966, it starred Gwen Verdon and was staged by
Bob Fosse. The 1969 film version starred Shirley MacLaine, John McMartin, and Sammy Davis Jr. Hit revivals have included Christina Applegate who starred in the Broadway revival in 2005, Tamzin Outhwaite who starred in London's West End production in 2010, and most recently Stutton Foster in a critically acclaimed off-Broadway performance in 2016.
