We know that the Venn diagram between the worlds of “Classic Rock” and “One Direction” may seem like it’s just two separate circles, but there is one person keeping both together: Harry Styles. Not only has the singer been seen paying tribute to rock legends such as Pink Floyd and Elton John by way of some eclectic wardrobe choices, but over the weekend further earned his rockist stripes with covers of Bob Dylan and Nirvana.

We can understand that for many, the idea of Harry Styles taking on two legends such as Nirvana and Bob Dylan might seem like bold choice, but the performances show that Styles can hold his own when he tackles grundge. Styles dipped his toes into the classic rock cannon during an appearance at Tokyo’s Gigabar, which is known for letting its patrons borrow from their collection of instruments and props to jam out for one another. Despite requiring more talent than your average karaoke bar, the vibe seems all the same, as evidenced by the exuberant Cobain-growl exhibited in Styles’ take on “Smells Like Teen Spirit”:

Bad news for those excited to hear Harry’s Bob Dylan drawl, as the 1D alum traded in the mic for drumsticks when he and his pals decided to follow in the footsteps of Axl Rose and take on “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”:

It’s been almost two years since Styles officially released any new music, but if these videos are anything to go by, maybe we’ll get to hear his studio take on “Stairway to Heaven” by the end of the year?
