The future of Britney Spears’ career has been marked by uncertainty for most of 2019, after news broke that the singer had checked into a mental health facility and the ensuing #FreeBritney drama that followed. Today in an interview with TMZ Spears’ manager revealed that the answer to what’s next for Britney might be even more up in the air than we thought.

Larry Rudolph, Spears’ manager since her 1998 emergence, opened up about the circumstances that led to Britney’s current hospitalization – and what that might mean for her career moving forward. Rudolph claims that Spears was two-thirds of the way into rehearsals for her now-cancelled Vegas residency when “we had to pull her show because her meds stopped working and she was distraught over her dad’s illness.”

As for how Spears’ current state affects the future of her Vegas residency – or any live performances at all, for that matter – Rudolph sadly told fans not to hold their breath: “From what I have gathered it’s clear to me she should not be going back to do this Vegas residency, not in the near future and possibly never again.”

Though news of your veteran client taking an indefinite hiatus from the spotlight may not be what talent managers want to hear, Rudolph made it clear that his approach to the situation is one that places Spears’ well-being above all else. “I don’t want her to work again ’till she’s ready, physically, mentally and passionately. If that time never comes again it will never come again,” he admitted. “I have no desire or ability to make her work again. I am only here for her when she wants to work. And, if she ever does want to work again, I’m here to tell her if it’s a good idea or a bad idea.”

Thankfully, fans appeared to have the same approach to the situation, making it clear that the artist they love getting the help that she needs is far more important than any new music or tours:

Spears’ fans have been outspoken about their concern for the singer throughout the past months, channeled largely through the #FreeBritney hashtag that’s meant to raise awareness of the alleged control that Spears’ father has over her career – a control that was reportedly challenged by Britney herself earlier this week in front of the courts.
