The second album from Supercaan, A Tiger Walks The Streets presents a meditative allure in its tactfully unfolding array of atmospheric rock. Serene vocal introspection and spacey synth incorporations appear in enjoyable form throughout the album, which pursues a thematic poignancy in perseverance and survival. “The tiger represents the creeping threat of modernisation and the sense that our place in the world is fragile,” says lyricist Tom Whitfield.
The album’s opening title track sets into motion an atmospheric listening experience, one propelled initially here by spacey synths with a glimmering momentum. The quaint, aquatic-like swell of “Zoetrope” follows, incorporating crisp guitar tones amidst the playful synth tones. The anthemic rock sound enamors from there, both in the spacious electronic moments to the calming, reflective vocal movements — bursting with guitar-touched radiance upon the “escapes,” vocal line, reminding fondly there of British Sea Power.
The highlights continue consistently. “Belligerents” also embraces an initial synth-forward glow that expands cohesively into bustling post-punk and rock arsenals. “Ricochet” develops with more patient precision, as throbbing synths and new-wave bass clanging traverses into the bright guitar whirring in the second half. The finale “Panic Carefully With Me” is reminiscent of Spiritualized in its starry-eyed introspection, masterfully concluding the excellent A Tiger Walks The Streets.
