Joey MacMahan – “Suits and Simpletons”

Published: April 18, 2024

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and producer Joey MacMahan unveils an atmospheric, melodic state of somber reflection on “Suits and Simpletons.” A woozy blend of acoustic guitars and forlorn vocals warn to “brace for impact,” as sporadic percussion assumes more prominence. Gorgeous string-laden subtleties shine as MacMahan’s vocal layers attain a soaring immersion. “Suits and Simpletons” is a moving, climactic success from Joey MacMahan, who elaborates further on the track, below:

I wrote suits and simpletons in a single night after an argument with a friend I’d gone into business with. I sought to capture the feeling of hating those who put business before love, while still admitting my own feelings of inadequacy in those situations. “Suits and Simpletons” refers to the dichotomy in each of us that present one way while feeling another. Under the anger in the lyrics is an emotion of regret, understanding, and sympathy.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
