Gravelarks – “Brittle Bones”

Pittsburgh-based rockers Gravelarks unleash a striking sound on their new album Sublimation, inspired by a range of genres from Slavic folk to soul and blues. In general, it’s a darkly tinged vein of alternative with flourishes of post-punk rhythms and prog-friendly guitar expansion (particularly on “Anodyne”). Stephen Jarrett and Candice McDermott alternate vocal duties, occasionally coming together, like on the excellent “Brittle Bones” — where an enjoyably jagged guitar lines clunks through in melodic fashion as the two vocalists combine for a beautifully jarring hook, with flourishes of nostalgic ’90s alternative emerging within the guitar tones over the final minute.
