Asian Fred – ‘Super No. 1’ EP

Published: September 17, 2018

Super No. 1 is a great new indie-rock EP from Asian Fred, one of the most consistent releases in the rock genre this far. Fred Huang’s project – which incorporates a timeless rock feel with hook-y songwriting, a la Dr. Dog – impressed with the single “W.P.” in May and this EP is a continuation of that track’s successful sound. Its other five tracks all showcase their own flavor, too. “American Pop Culture” evolves from suave, western-y twangs into showcasing a gorgeous, organ-laden glow, while “1987” alternates between foreboding atmospheric ambiance and anthemic folk. Closer “When I Speak” is likely the album’s most accessible effort, its Beatles-esque progression and bouncy keys proving irresistible in an enjoyable retro-pop vein.

Rather than pick a single track out this time, Super No. 1 is recommended a listen in full. Do so above or stream on Spotify here.

“American Pop Culture” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2018’ Spotify playlist.
