Jay Z is putting his film producing hat on again to bring to the small screen a docu-series about slain Florida teen, Trayvon Martin.
According to Variety, the rapper and the Weinstein Company agreed to team up after a major bidding war to have the rights to books “Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It” and “Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin.”
Both publications discuss the tragic events leading up to and following the 2012 shooting death of Martin.
Per the news outlet, Jay will produce a six-part docu-series as part of a “first-look deal he singed with the studio last September.” In conjunction with Jay’s docu-series, the studio will produce a “narrative feature film” about Trayvon’s case.
It’s worth noting that the Weinstein Company is behind Michael B. Jordan’s Fruitvale Station; a biographical drama that chronicled the 2009 shooting death of unarmed Black man, Oscar Grant.
Per Variety, the team met with Martin’s parents earlier this year to discuss the project. During the sit down, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin reportedly explained they were concerned about one major thing: “Seeing their son’s life and legacy honored.”
Trayvon was just 17 years old when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman. In July 2013, the 28-year-old was acquitted of second-degree murder after claiming he shot Martin in self defense.
