Mariah Carey is finalizing her return to Sony Music, Billboard reports. Once this multi-album deal through Epic Records is complete, Carey will re-release her greatest hits compilation #1‘s, to also coincide with her Las Vegas residency of the same name.
With her return to Sony, Carey will team with record executives who brought her success in the past: Sony chairman/CEO Doug Morris, who brought her to Island Def Jam in 2003, and L.A. Reid, who oversaw the release of 2005’s The Emancipation of Mimi. There is a catch, though: Despite Carey’s overall track record, she is also signing for a fraction of her previous record deals.
With Carey’s pending divorce from Nick Cannon and record low album sales with 2014’s Me. I Am Mariah …. The Elusive Chanteuse, no other label made the pop superstar an offer. “Sony’s was the only deal on the table, and it came out far lower than expected,” an insider said, adding that she “was asking for a $3 million advance; she didn’t get it.” Keep in mind that in 2000, Carey had signed a four-album, $80 million deal with EMI’s Virgin Records.
