Sam Smith Is Back In The Studio And We’re Freaking Out

Published: June 07, 2017

In order to find inspiration for new music, artists often have to step away from the spotlight and busy touring schedule to experience life. We’ve seen this happen many times with musicians taking extended hiatuses in between albums, a move that can feel risky when one is seemingly at the height of their career.

Adele is notorious for disappearing in between records, with fellow popstar Taylor Swift virtually in hiding for the past year. Ed Sheeran spent months traveling the world incognito before recording his 2017 album Divide, while iHeartRadio MMVA performer Lorde went home to New Zealand to party with her friends and grow both as an individual and an artist.

Like these artists, British singer Sam Smith knows what it feels like to be at the top of the charts and dominating award shows. He also knows that taking a step away from his public persona to focus on his private life is necessary in order to get the creative juices flowing for second album.

In 2014, Smith released his beautiful debut album In the Lonely Hour. The album included the singles “Lay Me Down,” “Money On My Mind,” “Like I Can,” “I’m Not The Only One,” and Smith’s monster hit “Stay With Me,” which won song of the year at the 2015 Grammy awards.

Smith’s album took home three other Grammys that year, with the singer also winning the highly coveted Best British Breakthrough and the Global Success Awards at the 2015 Brit Awards.

Following the release and success of In the Lonely Hour, Smith recorded “Writings on the Wall” for the James Bond Spectre soundtrack. The English singer took home both the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, collecting the award with his collaborator Jimmy Napes.

Fans haven’t heard much from Smith over the past year and for good reason. The singer has been busy working on the follow-up to In the Lonely Hour and has now shared a few photos and details from the recording sessions.

Hitting the studio once again with his writing partner Jimmy Napes, Smith posted nine photos on his Instagram account this week, labeling the images ‘Recording x.’ Recently celebrating the three-year anniversary of his debut album, Smith has stayed mum on the release date of his next album, but rumors are swirling that it should drop sometime around September.

In addition to Napes, Smith is also working with record producer Timbaland, possibly signaling a more R&B and pop infused sound for his upcoming album.

Not surprisingly, we aren’t the only people freaking out over news of more Sam Smith music in the near future. Admittedly, it has been a while.

But now is the time to celebrate.

And hyperventilate.
