Lorde Reimagines Six ‘Melodrama’ Songs In New Videos

Published: August 17, 2017

After taking four years in between her debut album Pure Heroin and sophomore effort Melodrama, Lorde is showing off exactly why it takes so long to create a masterpiece.

After releasing Melodrama in June, Lorde has been busy playing the iHeartRadio MMVAs and festivals, and is scheduled to perform at the 2017 MTV VMAs on Sunday, August 27. Wasting no time and no songs, Lorde has now released six new videos of the singer performing stripped down versions of her Melodrama tracks. It’s like two songs for the price of one.

Teaming up with Vevo, Lorde hit the recording studio along with her cowriter and producer Jack Antonoff to talk about the making of her critically and commercially successful new album.

“It made so much sense to me to come here and do a session and unpack these songs from Melodrama. I’ve never done anything like this before. I don’t really do acoustic sessions or anything, but with this record, it had roots in acoustic instruments, in live musicianship,” said Lorde. “I think when you start to strip a song back, you really come back to this place of where you were building it.”

In the new interview, Lorde revealed that after spending many months writing songs for Melodrama with Antonoff in LA and later in the Bleachers frontman’s house in Brooklyn, the pair decided that they needed to hear the music played in a big studio. They ended up at the famous Electric Lady Studio, where Melodrama was recorded. “I instantly felt very at home,” said Lorde on arriving at the iconic studio.

Lorde said the pair searched for six months to find a piano that gave a sound she described as a ‘rural French town hall,’ something they finally found in the piano at Electric Lady Studio. The pair used the piano again, hitting the Electric Lady Studio to perform six songs from Melodrama in new, stripped-down arrangements.

Joined by a choir of singers, Lorde also performed on the rooftop of the New York recording studio, singing “Hard Feelings/Loveless” in a group setting, as the singer says she always imagined it.
