This thick-beated joint from Gucci’s Mr. Davis features a cameo from Georgia’s finest rap trio, who these days, you’re more likely to hear as solo features than the whole package. Everyone’s in fine, quick-tongued form on the druggy single, which dropped in early September, but stands out as a favourite on La Flare’s *eleventh* album.
Over the span of his nearly 30-year career, Beck has had full reign to do almost whatever the hell he wants—a luxury which, for whatever reason, isn’t always gifted to his peers. From his early 90s lo-fi introduction through to Guero‘s retro-pop and the Grammy-winning folk on 2014’s Morning Phase, the guy is as brilliant as he is versatile—meaning a full-blown pop statement like today’s Colors will be welcomed with open arms.
As if we had any doubt, Toronto’s raddest pop star really doesn’t sleep. Reyez had a blockbuster summer; releasing her critically-acclaimed EP Kiddo and lending her sweet vocals to Calvin Harris’ “Hard To Love,” proving she has no shortage of art up her sleeve. Today, she unexpectedly dropped her most hip-hop-infused single to date—a snappy take-down of anyone who’s doubted her prowess.
LA-via-Jersey songwriter Cara Salimando takes on this Cigarettes After Sex single with ease, using her pure, feminine vocals and echoey reverb to mold the sleepy ballad into something of an anthemic, coming-of-age escape.
Well, if this isn’t a match made in heaven, I don’t know what is. The former Walkmen-frontman (and tireless solo artist) joins forces with indie-folk queen Angel Olsen on this waltzing doo-wop ballad, that sounds just as much 60s promenade as it does achy old country. Between their duelling vocals and all the rich strings, I’m petitioning for a full-length collaboration starting now.
