5 Times The xx Showed Their Love For Drake

Published: June 26, 2017

There are few things we love more than our favourite artists, but our favourite artists loving our other favourites artists? Well that’s just the cherry on top of a musical sundae.

British trio The xx have never been shy about their love for the 6ix God himself and the feeling is mutual. What would an album between The XX and Drake sound like? We’d love to know.

Check out five times The xx showed their love for Drake.

1. They Sampled Drake On Their Track “Naïve”

Fans that purchased the vinyl edition of The xx’s 2017 album I See You may have noticed that the bonus track “Naïve” includes a sample of Drake’s “Doing It Wrong” from 2011’s Take Care. Now the track has been made available online for all to enjoy.

2. They Covered Drake And Rihanna’s ‘Too Good’

Stopping by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, The xx performed a cover of Drake and Rihanna’s 2016 track “Too Good.” Released as part of Drake’s record-breaking fourth album Views, “Too Good” is a he said/she said exploration of a relationship on the rocks. The dueling voices in the emotional track provide prime cover material for The xx, with singers Romy Croft and Oliver Sim delivering beautifully breathy and melancholy vocals to their dreamy rendition of the song.

Introducing the cover, Sim revealed, “We love this song. We have taken it to a different place—it’s maybe not as danceable, but we hope you enjoy it.”

Stripping the dance hall vibes and slowing it down, The xx craft a sombre song their own, giving fans a new twist to put on repeat. The band has performed the song a number of times in concert much to the delight of fans.

3. They Share A Mutual Love For Sampha

Okay, okay, we know. Who doesn’t have love for Sampha? But in the case of Drake and The xx, their love has included studios and tours. Drake featured Sampha on his 2013 album Nothing Was The Same as well as his 2017 mixtape More Life. As for The xx, the trio enlisted the smooth vocals of their fellow Englishman for an opening spot on their 2017 tour, having previously remixed their music.

4. Jamie XX Gave Drake A Huge Sample

In 2011, The XX’s drummer Jamie XX released the track “I’ll Take Care Of You” with Gil Scott-Heron. Drake was such a fan that he sampled the entire song, enlisted the help of Rihanna and renamed the single “Take Care.”

5. They Named Their Album After Him

During an interview with Rolling Stone, The xx revealed that their sophomore album I See You is named in honour of Drake after seeing the 6ix God in concert. “He just called out to all these different people,” Croft told Rolling Stone. “‘I see you, in the purple jumper! I see you. …’ It was really funny but you know, it’s warm, it’s affirming that you see your friend. You feel understood and you don’t feel as alone.”
