This Week’s 5 Best Songs: Operators, Mikal Cronin and more…

Published: January 30, 2015
This week's 5 best songs run the gamut from hip-house to orchestrated indie pop, slacker rock and more. They're waiting for you to hit play.

Operators, "Ecstasy In My House"

YouTube Video

Dan Boeckner and Devojka's synth pop outfit deliver a serpentine, four-on-the-floor rave-up for Boeckner's plaintive cry. Not every dance is a celebration; sometimes it's an exorcism.

Mikal Cronin, "Made My Mind Up"

Here, Cronin channels Evan Dando, where even this stew of sunny licks manages to sound bittersweet, as if good times themselves portend rain clouds. No reason why melancholia can't be crazy catchy though, right?

Kaytranada feat. Vic Mensa, "Drive Me Crazy"

Montreal producer Kaytranada made his name with remixes, but as he moves into full-scale collaborations (let's call them "pre-mixes"), he's showing what he can really do. Vic Mensa is at his best over neon electronic beats (the rap flow every DJ dreams of), so this is a natural fit.

Courtney Barnett, "Pedestrian At Best"

YouTube Video

“Put me on a pedestal, and I’ll only disappoint you,” rolls off her tongue, dripping in desperation and self-deprecation. In quick succession, she spews everything an over-self-conscious 20-something has bottled inside after a shitty day.

Alex G, "Sarah"

"Sarah" is an unreleased song from Trick, a 2012 album getting a re-release, and it's a gem, occupying the space between a softly-strummed indie ballad and a woozy lie-back-and-watch-the-ceiling-spin stunner.
