PREMIERE: Mystic Triangle serenades swirling colours in “Snake Eyes Wins” video

Published: December 18, 2014

If on your weekend trips to the record store you find yourself hovering the "darkwave/cold-fi/synthkraut" section, you must check out Mystic Triangle before your annual pilgrimage to Berlin. MIMICO's Benjamin Oginz went solo to create Pulses, and went half naked into a kaleidoscopic vision question for "Snake Eyes Wins," his new video directed by Avery Strok.

Oginz plays alone in Mystic Triangle, but still approaches his music almost like jamming. Over email we discussed how playing basically live on the apocalyptic (The Stars My Destination-influenced) deterioration drama Pulses determines the hypnotic repetition of the music:

"Working alone can be very liberating. It's taught me to exploit my limitations. What I do with Mystic Triangle is really geared toward the performance aspect so I haven't really gotten into a lot of programming beforehand.

Music-making is a very spontaneous thing for me. Learning how to improvise from playing jazz definitely is a big part of what I do now. I come up with songs by jamming with myself, then fine tuning them by stripping things away until I have this essential quality. That essence is then repeated over and over until I'm satisfied. Repetition in music is a hypnotic thing and I like to play with a lot of restraint. One thing I've learned over the years is that it's not important to know what to play, but to know what not to play."

Mystic Triangle's new album Pulses is out now via Reel Cod.
