PREMIERE: Future PEERS’ “For Friends” is like a carnival ride gone wild

Published: December 01, 2016

Future PEERS like to say that they were "hatched" at the Banff Art Centre. During an intensive residency program there (where they were mentored by figures like Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene), the party pop band formerly called Boys Who Say No, was fundamentally transformed. Now, they return to us refreshed, wide-eyed, and full of stories as if they just spent a gap year in the future.

Future PEERS' new song "For Friends," premiering on Chart Attack today, is an exuberant, narcotic bit of psych pop in the family of Animal Collective and Dan Deacon, mixed with a little Wolf Parade indie rock dramatics. Carnivalesque and arcing with wild power — it's like the Gravitron spun so hard it made lift-off. One hell of a ride.

The band told us about tracking the song with Weezer producer Shawn Everett:

"This was the first song we recorded with Shawn at the Banff Centre. We were all strangers at the beginning of the day, but flash forward a few hours and we're all electric with energy and creating some amazing stuff.

Our sessions with Shawn at Banff were so fun and exciting that word started going around with the recording students. They started showing up and sliding into the control room. By midnight we had a full house so we ordered a bunch of beers and pizza and basically hosted a party in the control room. For the rest of the time at Banff each of our tracking days were full of recording students hungry for knowledge, good music, beer and pizza. It was awesome."

Press play and feel the awesome for yourself.

Future PEERS' debut self-titled album is out December 9 through Phi Rho Sigma.
