NOW HEAR THIS: The smoke ‘em if you got ‘em 4/20 edition

Published: April 20, 2015
Now Hear This is a daily dive into the standout songs of the... well, whaddya know? It's 4/20. Happy holiday, pot fiends! Here are a bunch of leafy jams to help you feel right.

Slim Twig, "Cannabis"

Toronto rock 'n' roll time traveller Slim Twig probably had a blast recording his cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "Cannabis," trying to capture a sound as wobbly, preposterous, and fried as the era from which it came. If A Hound At The Hem was his take on '60s pop, "Cannabis" announces a revival of the '70s with that same keen ear towards composerly arrangement. "I've been obsessed with this song for a long time," Twig says, "and as my new album is so much about a refinement of my arrangement ability, it made a perfect canvas for a new take. The new album is a total inner headspace production rabbit hole. Sex, smoke, protest and mystery wrapped into one."

Slim Twig's Cannabis 7-inch is out now on DFA Records and available for download here.

Fucked Up, "California Cold"

After nearly two decades straight edge, Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham has come out as a vocal advocate for the efficacy of medical marijuana. Now, I'm exactly the kind of person who would snicker at the idea that you could hear that in their music. Fucked Up have always played with psychedelia. But, then, there's those flutes. And I wonder if you can hear it.

Fucked Up's Year Of The Hare 12-inch is available June 16 via Deathwish, Inc.

Spotify's Top 20 4/20 Playlist

So we were gonna find you some more brand new pot-related songs, but then we, uh, got kinda lazy. You can get that, right? Spotify did the kind service of compiling the 20 most streamed songs on 4/20. It's an entertaining document to say the least. Top up on Ringolos, 'cuz they got all the classics...
