NOW HEAR THIS: Mount Eerie does a Pinball Session, Caribous Dan Snaith remixes himself

Published: September 16, 2014
Now Hear This is a daily deep dive into the standout songs of the day.

Caribou, "Our Love" (Daphni mix)

The Dan Snaith love-in continues. First as Caribou he delivers two stellar singles, "Can't Do Without You" and"Our Love," now the latter gets a remix from Snaith's DJproject Daphni. It narrows the disparate soul of the original's influence into a more identifiable split core of techno/house, resulting in a far more trance-inducing number.Buy it here and, for a guaranteed crowd pleaser, play it at your next DJ set at the "Snaith for Mayor" rally/rave.

Caribou's new album Our Love is out October 7 via Merge; pre-order it here.

Mount Eerie, "Dragon"

YouTube Video

Phil Elverum, multifaceted wizard of bespoke independence, casts yet another spell as Mount Eerie with "Dragon."The singer/songwriter has a song with theswingof the best Pixar films in his new live Pinball Sessions session - monsters, rich environment, a childlike sense of exploration coupled with adult confusion. All with a guitar and a lot of ringing, discordant melody. What are you gonna do, watchAntz??

Mount Eerie's new double album Sauna is out in early 2015 viaP.W. Elverum & Sun.

Angel Olsen, "All Right Now"

Any summary awareness of Angel Olsen's catalogue - country-folk that comes in both eruptions and whispers - and you know that nothing is quite "All Right Now." She builds a lovely, dust-coluredchapel, engrossing and appealing how to matches electric/acoustic guitar interplay with flats of organ chords. Yet her trembling insistence of the song's title leaves the song's rapture stuck in your throat, a promise's carcass that's stinking up all the roses she's laid out.

The deluxe edition of Angel Olsen's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is out November 19 via Jagjaguwar; pre-order it here.

Lakker, "Math Fall"

Lakker's ambitions with post-dubstep may not be as cinematic as Burial or as "Stussy outlet"as Mount Kimbie, but the Irish duo still bring it every time. The pigeon shit-stained bliss and hardcore throb combination is perfectly tailored: each element tempers each other, so the track never goes full Kode9 or Container, and stays on its own snaking underground tunnel system to nowhere.

Lakker's new 12" Mountain Fall is out October 13 via Mountain Divide

Future Brown feat. Tink and 3D Na'Tee, "Wanna Party" (remix)

Future Brown is the brainchild of grime new-waver Fatima Al Qadiri, Fade 2 Mind producers (and bomb DJs) Nguzunguzu and LitCityTrax's J-Cush. They've just signed to Warp, and have delivered a new version of last year's tubular bell turn-up "Wanna Party." Tink still borrows Cassie's sliding monotone on the hook, but New Orleans rapper3D Na'Teeflips a switchblade on the entire track. A year later, it's still a future banger, and a big indicator that Future Brown could be the group to give the club a huge paradigm shift.

Future Brown's new single "Wanna Party/World's Mine" is out November 3 via Warp; pre-order it here.
