Big Week for Canadian Indie Music

Published: April 24, 2017

While the actual awards proceedings were satisfactory the real show was the showcase of indie artists. Hosted by Indie 88’s morning show hosts Josie Dye and Matt Hart, the event kicked off with a performance from Jim Beam’s Make History Talent Search Winners: The Nursery

The Nursery’s performance was followed by Weaves accepting their award for best Alternative Artist/Group of the Year. Another Indies winner, Repartee then took the stage to perform. The St. John's based synth-pop band rocked the crowd with their set which included the hit “Dukes”.

The awards portion of the program was bogged down by video glitches and Josie and Matt continuously telling the crowd they were going to get high on the radio the next day as part of their 4/20 celebrations. The highlights included a video acceptance by Toronto based rockers July Talk (who are currently on tour on the east coast); and Dan Mangan accepting the inaugural Indies Make History Award with an acoustic performance of his single Race to the Bottom. While it was disappointing to only get one song from the Juno Award winning singer-songwriter, he hosted the Madic Records CMW Showcase at the Monarch Tavern on April 21st. The line-up was curated by Mangan and featured Walrus and Peregrine Falls - to showcase his Madic Records label under Arts & Crafts.

Back at the Indies though, The Wooden Sky kept the folk rock going with their set.

The musical highlight of the night was Indies Hall of Fame Inductees 54-40 who proved their legends status with renditions of their hits “I Go Blind” and “Ocean Pearl” they also played new music from their recently announced album, Keep On Walking.

12. Neil Osbourne of 5440 Performs at Indies CMW 2017

The night closed out with The Strumbellas accepting their award for Single of the Year and Hollerado shutting down the event with a set that had The Phoenix rocking.
