You know, I never much cared for the Beach Boys. In fact, until recently, I was all but totally against them. Maybe it was on account of how embarrassed I was to ever be young enough to love “Kokomo” or maybe it was all that time I fucking hated California or big, wide, soft harmonies. Maybe all three. Who knows? But a few months ago, I went on a bender of yearning to understand just what it is that makes people consider Brian Wilson an unmitigated genius which – of course – led me to Pet Sounds which, after a few gringing listens, revealed itself to be a a piece of batshit postmodern pop mastery which – it turns out – Mr. Wilson will be performing at the LEVITATION festival to celebrate the record’s 50th anniversary which is an event that spurred the event’s curators, The Reverberation Appreciation Society, to enlist a whole bunch of folks to pay homage to the album like Shannon and the Clams (swoon), The Black Angels and Night Beats who cover “Sloop John B” with a ragged air of Northwestern ash which you can sniff at your leisure right down below.
