Last week,
Oscar winner Emma Stone made headlines for landing the top spot on
Forbes' list of the highest-paid actresses of the past year, raking in an impressive $26 million USD between June 1, 2016, and June 1, 2017 — or at least the sum seemed impressive until the
list of highest-paid actors was released today (August 22).
Mark Wahlberg ousted Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for the top spot, making a cool $68 million in the last 12 months. Johnson, meanwhile, came in second with $65 million.
Vin Diesel, Adam Sandler, Jackie Chan, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar rounded out the top 10. It's not until you reach the 14th spot (Ryan Gosling with $29 million), though, that the paycheques even begin to resemble Stone's. With the
lists of highest-paid male and female actors combined, she comes in one spot behind her
La La Land co-star, at 15.
The second and third highest paid actresses (Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lawrence with $25.5 million and $24 million, respectively) ranked 16th and 17th on the overall list. Melissa McCarthy, who came in fourth on the female-only list, is tied at number 21 with Chris Evans overall; they each brought in $18 million in the last year.

The long-persisting pay gap is no secret in Hollywood circles, with Stone herself previously addressing the issue. Earlier this year, she
revealed that some of her male co-stars had taken pay cuts in order for her to receive equitable pay "because they feel it's what's right and fair."
Pay isn't the only issue affecting fair treatment of women in Hollywood, though. Stone has also admitted that directors have taken her own original improvised jokes on set and
given them to her male co-stars.
