Hello staff/non-staff users and welcome to the first of these posts that will analyze not how sputnik users rate albums, but what they write about them. Reviews are the focus of this site. User written reviews and their prominence are what distinguishes this website from other music database websites. Somehow/someway the reviews on here by the most deft among us were deemed prestigious enough to be sometimes included in the Reception/Release sections of album pages on Wikipedia and aggregated by metacritic. The promise of sputnik, and that of the country of its weary servers, is that if you write enough reviews and if they are good enough, you can be a god among men/(some)women and have a spiffy tag next to your name.
Text analysis has been in the news a lot recently so I thought I would throw my very amateur hat into the ring. To start, I wrote code to scrape the review text from every user listed in the staff page including contributors, staff writers, and emeritus users. Metadata from the review pages, including the number of views and comments, date of review, and ratings of the album were also scraped. If you would like to do it for yourself, go into R and copy the following into the console and hit enter to install the necessary packages:

Code to do the scrape is here. If you want to only scrape certain users replace the “do_staff <- TRUE” line to “do_staff <- FALSE” and list users in the line “users <- c("acadhdemy")” likes so “users <- c("user1", "user2", "me")” and makes sure that the usernames are the same as the name at the end of the url for the users you want to scrape (i.e. sputnikmusic.com/user/macman76+is+cool is “macman76+is+cool”).
If you run the code, a subfolder “/data/” will be created if it does not already exist, and it will fill with files named for the users you listed in “users <- ” line of code. They will have an extension “.rds” and if you run the following

sans the “<>” and with the name of the user’s file you want to read, “dat” will be a table with a row of data for each review published by that user. It will contain the username of the reviewer, the band and album of the review, the release date of the album, the publish date of the review, the url link to the review, the number of views and replies, the review rating, as well as the text and ratings of the review. To get the text of the first review of the “dat” object run the following

This post will be a data dump of sorts. For every staff/contrib/emeritus user, I will present a summary of their data including the median number of views and replies to their reviews, the average rating by the userbase of the albums they review, their average review rating of their reviews, and their most popular reviews by views and replies. Then, also, there will be a word cloud for all users of the 50 words they use that have the highest tf-idf. Term Frequency times Inverse Document Frequency (tf-idf for short) is a way of measuring how important a particular word is to each user. Words that they use frequently that are not used frequently by other users score highly in tf-idf. There was a ton of preprocessing done to these words to try to get this to be accurate (i.e. removal of band and albums names, removal of common first names and surnames, removal of text in quotes, numbers, of words only used by one user, and much, much more), but the processing can be improved (abbreviations for bands still pass through, I couldn’t figure out how to fix words with accents, and a few other things). If any of you guys are good at regular expression or text processing, shoutbox me.
The tools and idea to do this came from this very cool, free online book that is a companion to the “tidytext” package written for R. Also, the philosophy of “tidy” data formats comes from this cool-named dude (he is also probably the most influential R developer). So, thanks Hads.
