I’ve known about singer Awa Poulo for a while. Absolutely obsessed with this recording she made at Studio Mali in Bamako by Paul Chandler and his team last year. Poulo Warali is Peulh music at its best. The entire album speaks a consistent rhythmic language, weaves a lyrical tapestry of masterful vocals, ranging and raw, alongside the woody, acoustic interplay of n’goni (stringed instrument), guitars and calabash gourd thump. The album comes out January 20 on Awesome Tapes From Africa (LP/CD/Digital).
