August started off on a high note for live music. Two fan favorite festivals, Lollapalooza and HARD Summer, took place states away and served to be a weekend full of surprises for festival goers.

In Chicago, a packed Lollapalooza lineup, including artists like The XX, Kaskade, and Glass Animals, brought over 400,000 fans to Grand Park for the four-day event. On Friday night, The Killers played hits like “When You Were Young” and “Mr. Brightside” but lead singer Brandon Flowers also used his voice to cover “Starlight” by Muse, one of the bands whose set had to be cancelled due to the heavy showers that night.

Chance the Rapper answered calls for a reunion with former Savemoney rapper Vic Mensa by calling him on stage halfway through “Cocoa Butter Kisses”. But he wasn’t the only one with surprise guests! Charli XCX’s admiration for Halsey was no secret when she wanted company covering Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” and brought the electropop singer on stage. Fans didn’t expect any more surprises until Charli brought Chicago rapper Cupcakke on stage for “Lipgloss” and “CPR”.

On Sunday, indie band Arcade Fire gave the crowd what they came for: a ceaseless dance party. Mid set, however, Win Butler also used the stage as a platform to voice his hope for peace and love as the band transitioned into covering John Lennon’s “Mind Games”.

During this time, festival goers on the west coast were also making memories at the 10th HARD Summer Music Festival. A lineup with artists like DJ Snake, Justice, RAE Sremmurd, and Snoop Dogg didn’t fail to keep the crowds on their feet all weekend. Early Saturday evening, house DJ’s Malaa and Tchami got San Bernardino ready for the artist-packed weekend with their funk and hip hop elements in songs like “Notorious” and “Promesses”. On the Harder stage, French duo Justice hyped the crowd with hits like “Safe and Sound” and “Genesis”, closing their set with their banger “D.A.N.C.E.” To close the night, headliner DJ Snake left the crowd wanting more playing hit singles like “Lean On” and hits from his latest album Encore, such as “Let Me Love You” and “Middle”.
