Earth shaking sludge duo Eagle Twin will be making the pilgrimage over to our shores to begin their UK tour in Liverpool tomorrow, before calling at Leeds’ Yorkshire Riffer and London’s Desertfest this weekend, so we thought this would be a fine time to quiz vocalist and Gentry Densley on tour survival, and why Birmingham is “the Garden of Eden” when it comes to riffs…

Eagle Twin’s sound is a very interesting one indeed. Drawing from the likes of Tom Waits andCaspar Brtzmann Massaker as much as they do from sludgy heroes like Melvins, Neurosis and Earth, this pair have crafted their own very distinct niche within the world of modern doom. Tyler Smith absolutely batters his kit, providing a perfect accompaniment to Gentry Densley’s twisting, serpentine leads, deep, gravelly voice and, of course, planet sized riffs. The duo really come to life in the live environment, so if you’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing these guys unleashing their unique sound in person, here’s your chance!

For the uninitiated, how would you describe the Eagle Twin live experience?
Gentry (Densley, vocals & guitar): “It’s typically a face melting full body sonic massage with some neck breaking heaviness. Dynamics are important because we don’t stop for applause, we usually agree on a starting point and go full on until the end. Just let the set evolve and go in whatever direction we’re feeling and the audience is feeling and responding to.”

You’re playing two great UK fests in the form of Desertfest and Yorkshire Riffer. Are there any other bands on the lineup for either of these that you’re looking forward to checking out?
Gentry: “Ol’ faves like: Spirit Caravan, Church of Misery.

“Fellow duos: The Body, Ghold…

“…and always cool to see what Boris is up too.”

If you could pick three headliners for your ideal festival lineup, who would they be?
Gentry: “Goatsnake, Yob, and oh let’s say Tom Waits (‘Glitter and Doom’!)”

Where are your favourite places to play in the UK? How would you say the crowd reaction over here differs from the rest of the world, if at all?
Gentry: “I think the Supersonic fest in Birmingham was quite a nice show. Playing the same stage as Gnaw and Godflesh was legendary! Birmingham is the Garden of Eden of the heavy riffs and the UK audiences react well to the riffs.”

If you could impart three golden rules for tour survival, what would they be?
Gentry: “Play your ass off and give your all every night.

“Eat what ever the locals offer and enjoy!

“Drink well and sleep better.”

I’d imagine touring as a two piece would be less stressful than touring as a full band, but do you find you have a tendency to step on each other toes whilst on tour?
Gentry: “We’re a touring machine… we both have a strong work ethic so we keep busy. There is the occasional melt down but those become are less frequent in our wiser years.”

What does the future have in store for Eagle Twin after this tour?
Gentry: “We’ll start recording our 3rd full length album. It is all planned out and is a continuation of the first two albums into the mammalian world of the heavy hooves and horns with the growl of the bear and the howl of the wolf. We are talking of touring heavily around it to spread the gospel, proper.”
