Evil death metallers Cruciamentum will be playing their final show of 2014 (and first UK gig North of London in 3 years) in Liverpool this December, alongside Irish black/death merchants Malthusian and Liverpool’s very own doombringers, Crypt Lurker.
If you’ve got your ear attuned to the death metal underground, you’ll already be more than aware of Cruciamentum. Both of their early demos (especially ‘Convocation of Crawling Chaos’) quickly became very highly revered releases, and the following split with Vasaeleth and ‘Engulfed In Desolation’ EP cemented the quartet’s status as one of the UK’s most exciting new death metal acts. The band’s sound is sure to appease the more discerning death metal aficionado, marrying murky Incantation worship to that demented, chilling atmosphere that those Finnish bands of the early ’90s did so well (think Abhorrence, Demigod, Convulse… all that good shit!) and darting between bursts of blistering speed and humongous, desolate doom passages.
Malthusian, meanwhile, caused a bit of a stir last year with their ‘MMXII’ demo, an authentically grimy set of thick, subterranean death metal with an extremely high riff count. Whilst they may have only been a band for two years, they’ve already developed an extremely solid sound – not that you’d expect anything less from members of Altar of Plagues, Mourning Beloveth, Abaddon Incarnate and On Pain Of Death, of course.
And finally, we have Crypt Lurker, one of the three heaviest doom bands to lumber out of Liverpool (the other two being Conan and Coltsblood, of course). That said, their sound is still pretty distinct from their contemporaries, conjuring up an eerie vibe that draws from black metal and some of the more evil tendrils of death metal, whilst retaining that ominous aura that emanates from all the best doom bands. It goes without saying that they are amazing live too…
