SONG PREMIERE: Eddy Lee Ryder Offers Clever Pop Smarts with Infectious Single “Simple Touch”

Published: March 27, 2024

With the release of the new single, “Simple Touch,” the self-proclaimed “demented pop” chanteuse Eddy Lee Ryder announces the release date for her first full-length album, Sweet Delusions. Synthesizing timeless songcraft, dramatic introspection, and infinite pop smarts to create a breathtaking song cycle of apocalyptic romance and anxious regret, badly broken hearts, and wishful hope for the future, Sweet Delusions will be available on July 19th.

Quirky and charming while still precise and powerfully personal, Sweet Delusions reveals Eddy Lee Ryder as a one-of-a-kind new artist, her unabashed heartache and beguiling humor completely her own yet as identifiable and real as any of our own.

Penned and performed with uncommon brio and invention, Sweet Delusions sees Ryder musing on lust, longing, and lost love across shimmering choruses and a vertiginous undercurrent of contemplative melancholy, turning her raw pain into expertly wrought anthems that simultaneously hearken back to both truck stop jukeboxes and glittering art deco cafés.

Despite her love of guise and character, the clear through line that unifies Ryder’s still evolving body of work is her storyteller’s gift for cutting to the quick of her own complex, unconventional nature. Impossible to pigeonhole, with Sweet Delusions, Eddy Lee Ryder proudly avoids being fitted into any quickly particular category or genre, her creative adventurousness and tongue-in-cheek humor distinctly and undeniably her own.

Today Glide is excited to premiere Ryder’s new single, “Simple Touch,” which exemplifies Ryder’s witty but deeply reflective songwriting, offering up a keenly detailed snapshot of secret intimacies, small cruelties, and a relationship gone horribly south. The resulting song is a work of simple classic pop that is ridiculously infectious while also being fun and exciting. There is an element of sophistication as the band layers in organ and slide guitar, but at its core this is just a lovely pop song that will linger in your mind long after listening.

Ryder describes the inspiration behind the song:

Before I began dating my ex, there was a point I thought, “Is it awkward how many times I’m running into him?” To stave off the weirdness my thought process immediately goes to, “I know what would make this less awkward: I’ll wear a disguise! Grab a wig and sunglasses, and next time I see him, he won’t recognize me.” Lucky for me, my ex shared my same sense of humor and found the serendipity and the stalker-ish nature of our beginning funny. We began calling each other stalkers, but in an endearing way, which paved the lyrical foundation for “Simple Touch” and other songs like “Sweet Delusions.” As a result, “Simple Touch” has one of my favorite lines I’ve ever written: “I’m not a stalker, but I’m here on your street.” As strange as it sounds, it recalls a time in my life when what I thought weird and awkward was actually just two people happening to find each other (in weird and awkward ways.) The lyrics of “Simple Touch” are comprised of little disconnections and moments of desperation, when really all I wanted and needed was simple, a “simple touch.”
