In major bummer news, it was announced last night that Dead Meadow bassist Steve Kille has passed away. The information was revealed via Dead Meadow’s Instagram account, which let fans know of the sudden loss.

“It is with the absolutely heaviest of hearts that we have to announce our beloved brother, bandmate, amazing and utterly unique bass player, and gifted artist Steve Kille passed away at 12 am last night,” wrote Dead Meadow.

“Writing, recording, performing music with Steve felt as fresh; inspiring, and as important as it did 27 years ago when we first started playing together. We don’t know what words could express this level of loss.”

For those unfamiliar, Dead Meadow formed nearly three decades ago in the Washington, D.C. area and made a splash with their trippy, jammy blend of stoner rock with metal flavors. While they never reached the level of fame that other stoner rock bands have attained over the years, they still have a rabid underground following of fans who love their heavy, jammy music, and they seemed just as at home in small, grimy venues as on massive stages.

The band have recorded eight studio albums and several live records. Their latest record, and the last one Kille appeared on, was Force Form Free, out via Blues Funeral Recordings.

Immediately, folks flocked to the comments to share how important Kille’s contributions to the band was to them, along with offering condolences to the band and the bassist’s loved ones.

No other information has been released about Kille’s death, but those details aren’t what’s important. Compassion is what’s needed the most now, and we wish the best for his friends and family as they heal from this massive loss.
