BEST GUITAR SOLO EVER? (at around 2:14) Well, for me at least...at any rate this is the story of this video. In the '70's I was recording for blues legend Willie Dixon in Chicago and everything just went south. His company couldn't afford to release the album and my drummer quit, etc. I was at my drummer's house alone listening to albums to get some relief and I came across the album by Mahavishnu John McGlaughlin and Carlos Santana "Love, Devotion, Surrender". I had been into spiritual life for about 6 years at the time so it fascinated me. In the liner notes they explained how by meditating on the Supreme, He will take control of your playing. When the album ended I plugged in my guitar and meditated on Radha-Shyamasundara and my musical life was changed forever. I had grown stagnant playing the same old blues songs for years and everything was now fresh. Transcendental music became my goal.
My very dear friend Tommy Bolin used to say that you can't "blow your cookies" all on the first song of the night. I have been blessed with a lot of cookies and usually can "blow" them for hours. I have named this song several times including "Symphony 40: Blowing Classical Cookies" but have settled on using the title as inspired by Radha-Shyamasundara.
The story of the recording is simple. My keyboard came with different pre-set songs on it to jam along with. I found this one by Mozart and thought I would see how I would do with something classical. I plugged in the guitar and turned on the recorder and this is the result...one take, no dubbing, just me and the pre-set on the keyboard. When I played it back, it was one of those things where I could not believe I had played it. But then again, it was the meditation on Radha- Shyamasundara and I was simply Their instrument. At about 2:14 I kick the sound up a notch and from there on it is the best I have ever played I believe. Enjoy...Hare Krsna!!!
