Words & Music: Gus McLoughlin Freestatemusic
This song first came to my ears from the album, Sex, Sca and Sedition. Gus Mc Laughlin writes from a time, not so long ago, when river ferries were a regular feature on the Lee. All 29 of Cork's bridges and the mass use of the motor engine have now virtually put an end to the boats. Gus' mother used to sing part of the chorus while he played rowboat as a child, and he later used the lines as inspiration for his song. In his youth, Gus was quite taken with a jaunting car owned by Lar Flaherty, and other fond recollections are recounted in the ballad as well.
Máirtín de Cógáin & Norah Rendall singing with Brian Miller on guitar. Recorded live at The Celtic Junction in St. Paul, MN for the album From Cork with Love
