The Jetty Queen - The Apple Tree Polka
Words: Traditional & Music: Jimmy Crowley Freestatemusic -- Music: Brian Miller
Cork, being a port town, had (and still has) many types of ongoing relationships, long-term, short-term and very short-term. This song tells of the darker side of romance, when a bold soldier meets a "jetty queen", a euphemism of the time for a lady of the night. Moxley's is a long forgotten name for what is now known as The Angler's Rest, a hidden respite and a long stroll up the Lee from the Coal Quay. Jimmy Crowley added additional words but hasn't as of yet told me which ones.
With the need for a tune to top and tail the piece, Brian wrote The Apple Tree Polka so named for the great big apple tree in his (and Norah's) backyard.
Recorded Live at The Celtic Junction, St. Paul, MN.
