June 16 1967: The three-day Monterey Pop Festival in California began. All the proceeds went to charity when all the artists agreed to perform for free, the Summer of Love was born. The festival saw the first major US appearances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who. Also on the bill: The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Otis Redding, Buffalo Springfield, The Electric Flag and many others. Tickets were available for $3.50.

June 17 1943: Born on this day, Barry Manilow (born Barry Alan Pincus). In 1978, five of Barry's albums were on the best-seller charts simultaneously.

June 18 1915: A.P. Carter marries Sara Dougherty in Maces Spring, VA, forming two-thirds of what would eventually, with the addition of Sara's cousin and A.P.'s sister-in-law Maybelle, become country music's legendary Carter Family.

June 19 Two fine musicians share a June 19 birthday born on this day in 1950, Ann Wilson, of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame band, Heart, and born on this day in 1970, Brian Welch, guitar, Korn. Happy Birthday to Ann and "Head!"

June 20 1969: Today began the first of a three day festival, Newport 69, held at Devonshire Downs, now part of the North Campus of California State University at Northridge. Attended by an estimated 200,000 fans, the festival (June 20--22), was the largest pop concert up to that time and was headlined by Jimi Hendrix. Other artists included The Byrds, Johnny Winter, Spirit, Poco, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, and many more.

June 21 1955: Elvis Presley plays three shows at the City Auditorium in Beaumont, Texas, with bassist Bill Black and guitarist Scotty Moore.

June 22 Two very different songwriters share today as a birthday. Born this day in 1936 singer, songwriter, and actor Kris Kristofferson and born on this day in 1953, singer-songwriter, actress, and activist, Cyndi Lauper. On their birthday we'll remember that Girls Just Want To Have Fun...For The Good Times.
