Jason gets half and hour off
lunchbreak from the coffeeshop
and he comes around, we shoot the shit
at the coffeeshop that I work in
we talk about James Kochalka's new album
all the bands in Burlington
how when he gets his fire insurance check
he might put out a new cassette
how the band drove to New York to play
a showcase gig for CMJ
and then turned around and drove all night
to make it back for work on time, he says

when all of us get famous,
this conversation
will be much cooler than it is right now

woke up on Jason's couch, he says
"I gotta go, but you can hang out"
so I hang around and look
at Jason's stack of comic books,
he's got posters in the living room
Star Wars and old Sonic Youth
four-track and a bass guitar
second-hand green Fender Jaguar
everything by GBV, old Sun City Girls LPs
ticket stubs, an old set list
a special fanzine 7-inch

when all of us get famous,
this conversation
will be much cooler than it is right now

you worry though, about the costs
gasoline and alcohol
buying picks and sticks and strings
hoping something's happening
working at the same old job
getting Saturdays and Sundays off
trying to find a new place to play, well
nobody knows or cares your name

coulda been an astronaut I guess,
or a teacher or a cop
but it seems the older that I get
these things keep just not happening
guess I could go back to school
like my parents want me to
do all the things I shoulda done
back when I was 21
I tell Jason all of this,
he says "man, snap out of it"
if you could only hear yourself
10 or 15 years from now
