The Coldfront - Society - original video (2004) - Video

DESCRIPTION:
This was the first film I made, and by golly it shows. However it has a certain naïve charm, so Ive put it up anyway.

Sometime in late summer 2005, I came to the frankly bizarre conclusion that the world needed films made by me. The obvious place to start was music apparently. I couldnt afford a swanky digital camera, so I bought a very old analogue VHS-C camera for fifty quid (a rip off in the scheme of things) off a bloke in Great Yarmouth (Yarmouth has given me many things, including the mixing desk used to record Norwich City F.C.s pop single in the 80s, fact fans!). The Coldfront were doing a Howlback Hum rehearsal installation thing at the old Bally Shoe Factory in Norwich. I was asked to go along to record a song called Rock n Roll onto my Revox reel-to-reel (out of rose-tinged nostalgia rather than practicality), and I took my hi-tech camera apparatus along for the hell of it. I planned to edit footage of the song to the recording, but the tape was distorted and the performance - according to the band - was below par, so a rethink was necessary. They had a single coming out, so in the end I decided to edit the footage of them playing into a vaguely synchronised video to accompany the song Society. I bought a cheap analogue to digital converter off eBay, and attempted to use the bundled software to edit the footage. I pretty much gave up half way through synching video to audio was nigh-on impossible. I ended up finishing it in Windows Movie Maker with a load of atmospheric still images. (achieved by pressing pause on the camera and then capturing it as a clip hit tech again!). I pretty much gave up on this its more of an experiment really me playing around with some very low-grade software. I love the tracking lines from the original footage. You cant fake that on Final Cut...
