STATEMENT
'Maru' is a project series about "how to be conscious of things" and "how to express it". 'Maru' means, "circle" in Japanese. The first visual experience of a newborn is to become conscious of the light. As babies hear words just as "sounds", without comprehending the meaning of each word, they also see objects as "quantity and type of light". They see objects as a reflected light. Without the light, they cannot visually recognize an object.
Once they start to analyze the characteristics of the reflected light closely, babies begin to attribute a "meaning" of what they see. When trying to express themselves, using, for example, a pencil, they draw a circular, round shape. It is neither square, nor triangle. Babies draw curved, not straight lines. Their first images remind you of figure skating shapes. The transition of drawing a simple line to drawing a circle is a great leap for children.
Of course, the circle is not a precise circle. This "imprecise" circle means that we are human. In this imperfection, there is a possibility towards future.

Yoshio Machida's solo exhibition "MARU" at Graffit Gallery in Varna, Bulgaria from 28 Sep to 6 Oct, 2011. Curated and organized by Iva Paneva, Our World.
