Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "Zyglrox" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 20, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
I made a bit of time in between the latest 55 Cancri session and rehearsals for my third solo EP to do this one. As always, these parts are old as hell (mid-2008 being the last draft). The track I layered underneath is the original demo from the Bulb Soundclick page; this is what I used to write my parts, so occasionally you'll hear 'artifacts' of the programmed drums peeking through (most notably during the 8th-note displacement around 2:20).

I commonly 'shaved' BPM off of the Bulb demos that we'd turn into Periph jams and this was no exception. However, usually I did it because I felt that a mere 2-5 BPM would just make it groove a little harder; I did it with this sumbitch because I could never play it at 125/250, haha. If memory serves, the fastest I got it up to was 121/242. Back in the day, rehearsing this would always lead to a weird injury in my right hand - the only time I've ever injured myself playing (it was the insane section around 1:03 that caused it). Even now, my elbows would feel strange the day after rehearsing the parts. Don't try this at home, kids!

I used my 13" rack tom and 18" A Custom crash for this vid. I also layered my 17" A Custom crash on top of my 19" K china to dampen it; because of the more--than usual--percussive nature of its utilization in this song, I needed something that spoke quickly and got out of the way. "Totla Mad" is next.

Notes:
0:40 - 32nd-note fill-in is on the kick
0:54 - 1:02 - ghosts fill in 16th rests, then rimshots to ramp up intensity before one of the toughest sections in the song
1:38 - freak-out
1:41- 1:45 - brief 3-16 metric modulation to give this more 'movement' following the freak-out; crash in 3-16 is retained even within snare/china accents (which complement guitar stabs)
2:06 - a rare instance of me crossing over; this was done for visual flair, however
2:20 - 2:27 - 8th-note displacement
2:27 - 2:35 - a crash/china accent theme is introduced here and is retained even during the repeat when another 'freak-out' is occurring
2:46 - 16th-note quintuplet fill-in
2:48 - left hand 'sweeps' off of left crash to hit the rack
2:53 - 8th-note triplet fill-in begins on 8th-note upbeat
2:56 - brief 16th-note displacement
3:14 - 3:17 - brief 3-8 metric modulation; crash+snare/china accents are again retained
3:20, 3:26 - feet exchange 4s to keep power up during blast
bridge - the fill-in at the end of each 4-bar progression is a 2 against 3 polyrhythm

Disclaimer: In an attempt to stave off potential ignorant comments as I've received in the past, I felt the need for this nigh preposterous disclaimer. I am doing this for myself and for the sake of posterity. I put countless hours into these parts (composing, practicing, etc.) and wish to share them with everyone. I am in no way bitter or regretful; much on the contrary, I share a mutual friendship with everyone in Periphery and intend to keep it that way. Anyway, enjoy the videos!
