While posing as a "Chemical Expert" in an industrial greenhouse, one of Lotuspool's founders would drive 22 miles to and from work listening to a home recording of the Bully Pulpit. The tape was the product of three castaways stranded in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago and isolated from their dislocated circle of friends. The only migrating member of the group was Jim Valintin as he toured frequently with the Poster Children.

Working chemicals in a poorly regulated greenhouse, the Lotuspool founder spent many a hazed moment blissing to sounds of the Pulpit. Influenced by his altered state, he began cultivating a bigger idea than would normally seem appropriate. In conjunction with the release of the 1st Panel Donor album, Lotuspool committed to creating a new homegrown effort. This effort was to be a hybrid of the previously recorded Pulpit material and new songs captured at the Lotuspool farm.

Blasting off with a Fourth of July explosion; a thirty-foot bonfire and hundreds of Lotuspudlians christened the week of the Pulpit effort. The new tracks were laid in the Lotuspool barn, milking facility, and dining room.

The album received moody press. Some admired its experimentation but it was panned in Option for lacking sincerity. Among the mixed opinions, "Beyond Elysium..." received high praise from John Peel. It made his show on the BBC, which was unprecedented for a Lotuspool recording.
