Woolf Phillips (1919-2003) Parisian Mode - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 22, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Woolf Phillips was born in East London into a musical family. His brother Sid became a successful band-leader. Phillips could have easily turned his back on a professional music career as he was a very talented cricketer, so much so, that he was offered a contract to play for Lancashire cricket club. Instead he worked his way up in the music industry becoming in charge of the band at the London Palladium, where he worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr. Parisian Mode was composed in 1951 and shortly afterwards was heard weekly by millions of television viewers when it became the signature of the panel game "What's My Line"? Interestingly, little of the tune was heard as it faded out after just a few bars, even before the main theme had finished. This programme was an import from the USA where panellists had to try and guess someone's occupation from a short mime they performed. The American version of the programme had a totally different signature tune and as I have it in my library it is worth considering for a future upload.
