This January 4th will see the 36th commemoration of the untimely death of Phil Lynott "Ireland's Greatest Rocker”.....…
"Whiskey In The Jar" the breakthrough single by the band in 1972. The original and classic 3 piece line-up, Phil Lynott, (The Last of The Great Irish Rockers) bass guitar and vocals, Eric Bell lead guitars, Brian Downey drums. The track was originally recorded as the 'B' side to the recording 'Black Boys On The Corner'. However when the songs were played by producer Nick Tauber to the A&R man Frank Rodgers who discovered and signed the band to Decca he over ruled this and decided the this was the 'A' and not Black Boys.
With Phil's double tracked vocal and Eric's guitar solo (which must rank as one of the most famous and memorable guitar solos in rock history) the single was ready for release.
An edited version was produced for radio but the full version was sold to the public featuring Eric's classic dual guitars ( a feature copied by all the guitar players who later joined Thin Lizzy) It is said by many fans that when Eric left the band he was so good that Phil needed to employ 2 guitar players to replace him!!!!.....
The single reached number 6 in the UK charts and was successful across Europe.
In the 60's and 70's Irelands music scene was dominated by 'Showbands', six to eight piece bands who played other artists hits, Thin Lizzy were the first of a new breed of groups ploughing their own music furrow, they along with 'Skid Row' lead the breakthrough of the new generation.
Phil Lynott was 35 years old when he died. A great Irish talent, singer, songwriter and poet has been lost to drugs, he is sadly missed by his Family, Friends and Fans. A big celebration of his life is held in his home town of Dublin on the Anniversary of his death.
Philip Parris Lynott (August 20th 1949 - January 4th 1986)
We still miss you Philo.
