My woeful heart of all gladness barryain enforced me this complaint for to make, which i have sung with weeping eyen twain. full oft ere this, i shall undertake. till good tidings come my sore to slake i must obey for¬tunes ordinance, for yet i am all drowned in the lake of sorful joy and painetul pleasance.

For she which is of all goodly the best to mine entent, and so saith mo' than i, is fall but late out of her kindly rest into great sickness which holdeth her grievously. now i pray God, and that right heartily that she be voided out of the great grievance. for till she amend i shall have nought truly but sorful joy and pain;;ful pleasance.

English translation:

My suffering heart, bereft of all joy, forced me to make this complaint, which I have sung with two weeping eyes. She, the best of all the good, has fallen into terrible sickness. I pray heartily to God that she be removed from this great grievance. For untif she is well I shall have only sorrowful joy and painful pleasantness.

French translation:

Mon cœur empli de souffrance, abandonné par tout bonheur, m'a forcé à composer cette plainte que j'ai chantée avec deux yeux noyés de larmes. Elle qui, de tout ce qui est bon est le meilleur, est tombée malade il y a peu. Maintenant je prie Dieu de tout mon cœur qu'elle puisse être sauvée. Je me noie dans un lac de triste bonheur et de joie douloureuse jusqu'à ce que me parviennent de bonnes nouvelles.

German translation:

Mein schmerzvolles Herz, von allem Glück verlassen, hat mich gezwungen, dieses Klagelied zu machen, welches ich mit zwei weinenden Augen gesungen habe. Sie, von allem Guten die Beste, ist kürzlich in eine schreckliche Krankheit gefallen. Jetzt bete ich zu Gott von ganzem Herzen, daß sie gerettet werden möge. Ich ertrinke in einem See von traurigem Glück und schmerzvoller Freude, bis ich gute Nachrichten habe.
