Editing 4k vs hd concert footage: Joe Bonamassa - Sloe Gin - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 22, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
I made this split-screen video to illustrate just how much more you can do with 4k footage compared to hd. The unaltered footage straight from the camera is on the left and the edited version is on the right. Both the 4k and hd material were shot from the first row, in the center. Until 1:47 the footage is HD, and after that 4k, with only a few scattered bits of HD here and there.

The beginning of the video, up until 1:47 was shot in HD with an Olympus pocket camera in 1080p 24fps, handheld. There was a fair amount of shakiness here and there and as hd does not allow for drastic cropping without loss in image quality, not much cropping was applied. Mercalli V4 did a fairly good job at stabilizing it and I crop and panned (keyframed) where I could to stabilize it further and to zoom in on the main subjects, though there wasn't much to do about actual zooming in and out of the original footage. The original blue lighting looked a little bland so I turned it b&w and added contrast, colorizing the guitar only at 1:35. Plugins used: NewBlue V7 Tune-Up Plus for contrast and b&w; NewBlue AE Colorize for the color on the guitar, and Sony UnSharp Mask for sharpening. Bits of this HD footage shot by pessomar were used elsewhere in the video as well.

From 1:48 onwards I used my own 4k/25p, 25fps footage shot with a Panasonic Lumix LX100, handheld on a minitripod.
I think the advantages of shooting 4k become pretty obvious: despite the relatively short zoom of the camera, I was able to not only stabilize the image further by crop and panning it (keyframed) quite drastically but also to zoom in (cropping) by 75% and still maintain hd quality. This allowed me to eliminate unwanted elements and focus on the main subject. Keyframed crop and panning allowed me to follow the main subject (Joe) as he moved about the stage and to some extent remove zooming in and out present in the footage here and there. I used the mic stand, the rim of the stage and the front speakers as focal points for keyframed stabilization and keeping the image straight.

The plugins applied to the 4k parts:
NewBlue CF ColorFast for keyframed color, exposure and lighting, gamma and desaturation adjustments (both highlights, midtones, shadows and luminance were keyframed);
NewBlue V7 Tune-Up Plus for contrast and b&w; NewBlue AE Colorize for the color on the guitar and changing background, and Sony UnSharp Mask for slight sharpening.

Mercalli v4 (best stabilization) was used throughout.
For the first 13 seconds there was no footage so I used a pic of the liqor and an unused HD bit from elsewhere in the song.
The editing was done with Sony Vegas Pro13.
The audio was recorded with a Zoom H1, 48kHz, 24-bit (here 320mbs)
